Based on a Guangzhou folk legend, Time Before Time is set in the 1940s Hong Kong. Hui Dai Kwong (Lam Ka Tung) works in the rumored-to-be-haunted warehouse store Kwong Cheong Lung as a coolie. One day, he inadvertently sets free the beautiful ghost Siu Fu Yung (Kathy Chow) from an old umbrella, in which she's been waiting for her long-lost husband, Luk Wan Kwong, for 20 years. Dai Kwong helps Fu Yung find her husband, and that makes his girlfriend (Florence Kwok) jealous. It is later revealed that Dai Kwong is actually the reincarnation of Wan Kwong, whose murderer is eager to stop them from investigating the deaths of Wan Kwong and Fu Yung...
